What damage did Hurricane Gustav do?

Hurricane Gustav has already caused serious damage in Cuba:

Now it’s headed for the USA, where New Orleans has already been put under curfew:


New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005; now around 2 million people have been evacuated from the city:


Hurricane Gustav has been downgraded to a category 2 storm and has made landfall southwest of New Orleans. Despite causing serious damage, the worst fears have not been realised:


Hurricanes gain their energy from warm surface waters, which cause rapid upwelling of moist air. Now that Hurricane Gustav has made landfall, it has lost some of its strength and has been downgraded to a tropical storm:


By the 3rd of September, New Orleans was pronounced safe for people to return to:
